Hollywood Theater Offering Memberships

July 6th, 2012 | 1 Comment | Posted in General

The Hollywood Theater is launching a “membership program” offering discounts in exchange for anywhere from $45 to $1,000 a year.

The $45 basic level provides $5 admission to films ($2 off regular price), a free refill on a small soda and popcorn, one free movie pass and discounts on special events.

The $1,000 “Producer” level comes with two free admissions, free refills on any size soda and popcorn, and a private screening in which the member can choose a movie and invite up to 20 friends to attend the screening with free popcorn and beverages for all.

In between are packages priced at $100, $150 and $500, all providing tax deductions of varying amounts.

“Because our regular box office income provides only a percentage of our annual operating expenses, the Friends of the Hollywood Theater relies on fundraising events, grants, tax-deductible donations and memberships to keep us going as we raise the capital needed to purchase the building,” Scott Jackson said in a press release announcing the program.

He is president of Friends of the Hollywood Theater, a nonprofit 501(c)3 operating the theater at 1449 Potomac Ave., Dormont.

“Memberships will help us maintain the facilities of this historic building and keep the reels rolling with independent films, documentaries, foreign language cinema, classics and family films.”

Brochures are available at the theater or www.thehollywooddormont.org/memberships .

Fantasies come true

A sweepstakes tied into the new “Total Recall” will give people the chance to live out their fantasies for a day — as sports anchor, fashionista or rock star, among other occupations or obsessions.

“Total Recall” is an action thriller about reality and memory, inspired by the short story “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale” by Philip K. Dick. In theaters Aug. 3, it stars Colin Farrell as a factory worker who visits Rekall, a company that can give memories of a fantastic life. Arnold Schwarzenegger played the role in the 1990 version of the film.

In Sony Pictures Entertainment’s “Welcome to Rekall” sweepstakes atwww.WelcomeToRekall.com , moviegoers will get a chance to bring the Rekall experience to life.

Visitors also will be able to link their Facebook profiles to their entry to receive a personalized Rekall video, detailing the story of their brand new memories and successful Rekall experience, which they can share with friends on Facebook.

With nine categories to choose from, moviegoers will enter to win a premium prize package with top partners. For instance, the sports anchor winner will spend the day at ESPN headquarters, the rock star winner will get a closer look at Green Day, another will get a taste of the celebrity life in Los Angeles and attend a red carpet event.

In brief

• “The Dark Knight Rises” has a final running time of 2 hours and 44 minutes.

• Stanley Kubrick’s “A Clockwork Orange” will be shown at 2 and 7 p.m. Wednesday at participating Cinemark theaters as part of its summer classic series. Information:www.cinemark.com .

• Paramount Pictures celebrated Tom Cruise’s 50th birthday with the release Tuesday of the preview for “Jack Reacher” (the previously titled “One Shot”).

Mr. Cruise, of course, is the focus of a high-profile divorce filing by wife Katie Holmes, who accompanied him to Pittsburgh in 2011 during the making of “Jack Reacher.”

“Tom is a huge movie star for the right reason. He’s a very talented actor whose movies have entertained millions of fans,” Paramount said in a statement reported by the Associated Press.

“His ability to make a great movie, as we saw with the most recent installment in the ‘Mission: Impossible’ franchise — the most successful of the series to date — is the thing that moviegoers remember above all else.”
